Reflection
The event of Pentecost is the spiritual ‘big-bang’
of the Christian community, bringing to life the Church
as a dynamic, evangelical and missionary force within
the world. For nine days after the Lord’s Ascension
the early Christians gathered in the upper room with
Our Lady, having been instructed by Jesus ‘not
to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the
Father had promised’ (Ac 1:4). Faithful to this
word but unsure of what was to happen, they unite
in a cenacle of continuous prayer, until the day of
Pentecost arrives, when the house in which they are
staying becomes the epicentre of a spiritual revolution
that will change their lives forever. This revolution
is the invasion of divine love into the heart of the
Church. It is the coming of the Holy Spirit as a purifying
fire to establish the reign of God within the hearts
of men. The fire of God’s love animates them
to life and calls them and likewise us to proclaim
that, ‘a new age has dawned, the long reign
of sin is ended, a broken world has been renewed and
man is once again made whole’ (Preface of Easter
VI).
