Pentecost Sunday

Receive the Holy Spirit

“As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.” As we celebrate Pentecost, it is important to remember what it is about. The Holy Spirit is given to us, not as a possession, but as a power. And this power is one that can transform the world. We are given the power of love, which is invested in a special way in the various important relationships of our lives. That power of God is there in the sacrament of marriage, calling couples to love for the sake of the world. The power of love is in our families, making our homes the Domestic Church to the glory of God. And it is this power of God’s Spirit that is at the heart of every parish. All we have to do is practise that power and great things will happen all around us. There can be no doubt that great things need to be made happen in our world today. Receive the Holy Spirit.

Reflection

The event of Pentecost is the spiritual ‘big-bang’ of the Christian community, bringing to life the Church as a dynamic, evangelical and missionary force within the world. For nine days after the Lord’s Ascension the early Christians gathered in the upper room with Our Lady, having been instructed by Jesus ‘not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised’ (Ac 1:4). Faithful to this word but unsure of what was to happen, they unite in a cenacle of continuous prayer, until the day of Pentecost arrives, when the house in which they are staying becomes the epicentre of a spiritual revolution that will change their lives forever. This revolution is the invasion of divine love into the heart of the Church. It is the coming of the Holy Spirit as a purifying fire to establish the reign of God within the hearts of men. The fire of God’s love animates them to life and calls them and likewise us to proclaim that, ‘a new age has dawned, the long reign of sin is ended, a broken world has been renewed and man is once again made whole’ (Preface of Easter VI).
