Reflection - Repent
In the Gospel this weekend, Jesus is told about the
tragic deaths of some fellow Galileans. The insinuation
is made that, because they died so violently, they
must have been sinners. However, Jesus insists that
the manner of death tells us nothing of the guilt
of the person. This teaching went against the accepted
Jewish understanding of the time whereby it was believed
that an untimely death was ultimately a punishment
for sin. What Jesus puts before his listeners, rather,
is a different lesson – that the tragic loss
of life should lead us to appreciate the need to repent
of sin in good time so as to live always in friendship
with God. None of us knows the day or the hour when
we will be called to render an account of our lives
before God. So Jesus urges us to ‘Repent’.
Deaths
We pray for the recently deceased:
Lily McKenna (née Rogers)
London and Hillview Road;
Mary Judge, 140 Windmill Heights;
Hugh McCaffrey, Fintona and Ederney;
Peter McGowan, Drumcose, Monea. May
they rest in peace.
